The Doomed Jet Fighters of the Third Reich. Hitler's Desperate Miniature Warplanes

Inside the top-secret miniature fighters of the 1940s, PART 2. Discover the fascinating history of miniature fighters, secret experimental aircraft, and bizarre WWII aviation technology. During the most desperate years of the Second World War and the early days of the Cold War, major world powers turned to radical, unconventional engineering to gain air superiority. From vertical takeoff rocket interceptors to wooden pulse-jet prototypes, these tiny warplanes pushed the absolute boundaries of flight. PART 1: https://youtu.be/M_BbcIuk6BQ Germany initiated the Second World War with aggressive offensives, swiftly conquering much of Europe using blitzkrieg tactics. However, devastating Allied bombing campaigns soon forced the Third Reich onto the defensive, severely crippling their industrial capabilities. Facing critical material shortages, engineers designed extraordinary miniature aircraft. One of the most radical designs was the Bachem Natter, a vertical takeoff point defense fighter championed directly by Heinrich Himmler. Himmler heavily financed the project, ensuring the SS retained control over its development. The Natter was engineered to be launched from concealed woodland ramps, heavily armed with A6M rockets meant to completely disintegrate enemy bombers. After firing, the aircraft was ingeniously designed to break apart, deploying independent parachutes for both the pilot and the rocket engine. Wood became a highly vital resource for Germany, leading to the Focke-Wulf TA-154, nicknamed the "Mosquito". Initially successful, the destruction of the vital TegoFilm adhesive factory by British bombers forced the use of inferior glues, causing the aircraft to literally fall apart during flight. Later, the German miniature fighter competition sought ultra-cheap interceptors powered by Argus pulse jets. Prototypes like the Junkers EF 126 were captured by advancing Soviet forces, who eagerly tested the designs to advance their own early jet programs. The concept of the miniature fighter extended well beyond Germany. In 1941, the United States developed the Bell XP-77, a lightweight wooden fighter built to conserve strategic metals, though it suffered from severe performance issues and glue instability. Following the war, the dawn of the nuclear age prompted the creation of the McDonnell XF-85 Goblin. This incredibly small fighter featured folding wings and was designed to be carried entirely within the belly of a massive B-36 bomber to defend against Soviet interceptors. Deployed via an internal crane, it proved incredibly dangerous to recover mid-flight, leading to the program's ultimate cancellation. Britain also explored tiny specialized aircraft with the Fairey FD-1, testing advanced delta-wing aerodynamics at transonic speeds. Though highly imaginative, these incredibly complex and diminutive fighters ultimately failed to alter the course of military history, serving primarily as expensive drains on resources.
