The first Marine Reptiles

Over 300 million years ago shortly after evolving to leave the sea the fossil record already contains creatures that have adapted aquatic features and returned to the water. These creatures were ancient reptiles called mesosaurs and they are a contender for one of the first animals to return to water after leaving it. Despite being incredibly ancient they left many fossils so quite a lot is known about them and they lead very unusual lives in an unusual place.
