The Greatest Flying White Elephant - The Bristol Brabazon

Join this channel to get early access to new videos a week ahead of their public release: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCC8R7kmt-W14zWUcr8mymEQ/join Hello everyone! :D At the end of World War II, with civil aviation gradually returning to production in Europe, Britain stormed out of the gate with perhaps the most ambitious airliner project for the time, the Bristol Type 167 Brabazon, an airliner touted as the natural evolution of the ocean liner by creating a luxurious airborne giant for the transatlantic run that would include sleeping berths, an a la carte restaurant and an on-board cinema for the consumption of the world's most affluent travellers. Sadly, economics and the need for capacity and speed had outpaced the Brabazon's project, and even by the time the airliner made its first flight in September 1949, it was, in principle, an obsolete novelty, quickly scrapped after only four years of existence despite it being the largest landplane in the world at the time, though despite its loss and failure, the facilities and technology built to support this mighty machine would filter down through the wider aviation industry, ensuring that the Brabazon's death wasn't entirely in vain.
