Cold War secrets of flying bricks and secret NASA VTOL testing

NASA history and Cold War aviation enthusiasts, this documentary uncovers a vital, sometimes overlooked saga: the development of Lifting Bodies at Edwards Air Force Base. These wingless vehicles generated aerodynamic lift solely from their rounded geometry, designed specifically to validate the concept of returning from space with an aircraft-like landing rather than relying on ocean splashdowns. Witness how a daring theory led to the clandestine testing of the unpowered M2-F1, a plywood "flying bathtub" secret project towed across the massive Rogers Dry Lake by high-performance Pontiac convertibles and later a C-47 towplane. This successful secret prototype advanced lifting body research to heavyweight, all-metal configurations like the M2-F2, HL-10, and X-24 series, air-launched from modified NB-52B mother ships at an altitude of approximately 45,000 feet. This documentary utilizes rich historical footage and the observations of NASA test pilots like Milt Thompson, Jerry Gentry, John Manke, and Joe Engle to details the incredible technical and mental challenges. These craft was streamlined bricks, often with descent rates of 20,000 feet per minute and only minutes between release and a perilous landing. Test pilots faced major oscillation issues and control logic failures that could prove fatal. We cover massive program setbacks, including the devastating, program-halting crash of Bruce Peterson's M2-F2, and the essential rebuilding and research to rectify control concerns. Learn how this persistent, high-risk research ultimately paid off, providing the absolute proof that allowed NASA Houston to approve unpowered approaches for the Space Shuttle, saving millions in research and significant Shuttle launch weight, paving the way for the unpowered landing Approaches we see used today. The film also covers parallel work on VTOL concepts, including the innovative X-13 VertiJet. General Information Rogers Dry Lake provided the critical natural environment that enabled low-speed ground testing, high-altitude unpowered releases, and precise re-entry flight path verification for these challenging experimental designs. The XLR-11 rocket engine legacy continued with these lifting bodies, providing rocket thrust for many powered test flights to assess performance at high speeds and altitudes.
