In May 1923, Army test pilots Oakley Kelly and John MacCready set out to accomplish the first continuous, non-stop flight across the American continent aboard the massive Fokker T-2 monoplane. Carrying 725 gallons of high-octane gasoline—a payload that pushed the aircraft to its absolute weight limit—Kelly executed a hazardous high-weight takeoff from Long Island. Throughout the grueling 2,470-mile journey, the pilots were forced to crawl through a narrow passageway inside the fuselage past vibrating fuel tanks to swap control responsibilities, operating the aircraft from an unassisted internal secondary station during shifts. Navigating by primitive maps through pitch-black night skies and adverse weather, Kelly and MacCready maintained an average speed of ninety-two miles per hour before landing triumphantly at San Diego in just under twenty-seven hours.
