Pompeii-like explosion preserved trilobites in ‘unprecedented’ detail

It was the Pompeii of the Cambrian.
About 515 million years ago, a volcanic eruption blanketed shallow waters in what are today the High Atlas Mountains in Morocco. The ash entombed the invertebrates living in the soft mud of the ocean floor, and within hours reacted with chemicals in seawater and hardened into a rock that preserved a perfect mold of the creatures.
After imaging those molds, researchers report in Science the most detailed 3D anatomy yet of trilobites, the multilegged arthropods that dominated Paleozoic seas.
